CYBERSAFETY & Personal information
Life Class Lessons – Week of May 9th -May 13th

THE INTENT OF THIS PRESENTATION IS NOT TO SCARE, BUT TO INFORM!!!
What is CYBERSAFETY? Cybersafety is a common term used to describe a set of practices, measures, and/or actions an individual takes to protect personal information and a computer from attacks. THE INTENT OF THIS PRESENTATION IS NOT TO SCARE, BUT TO INFORM!!!

Cybersafety….. The convenience of the Internet comes with multiple risks such as identity theft, sexual harassment, credit card fraud, viruses, social stigma, job loss, isolation, and computer damage. However, being aware and vigilant while in the online environment can minimize these risks and offer security.

General Online Use When you log in or sign in to any online program or website, be sure to log off or sign out!!! Make sure your personal computer that is used to access the Internet is protected by spam blockers, updated anti-virus programs, pop-up blockers, and firewalls. Choose secure passwords that are a combination of letters and numbers. Do not share passwords. Avoid using the same password for multiple accounts.

General Online Use Do not select or accept the feature that automatically saves your login and/or password. Be very careful with downloads. A very innocent looking download may actually be a virus, Trojan, or malicious program that could slow down your computer, severely damage it, or completely destroy it. Only download from reputable, authorized sites. (If you are unsure, DON’T!)

SOCIALIZING ONLINE Blog - an online journal (weBLOG). It can be entirely private, selectively private, open, or available to the general public. (Blogger.com, Google blog, etc.) Wiki (Hawaiian term meaning quick) – a collaborative website that is made up of the collective work of many authors. Anyone is allowed to add, edit, or remove content. (Wikipedia) Social Networking – the grouping of individuals together into specific groups, often like a small community, with group members connected to each other by common interests or friends. (Facebook, MySpace, etc.)

SOCIAL NETWORKING When registering on a social networking site, be careful when responding to questions the site asks. Some questions are required and some are optional. Some of the information will help connect you to people based on commonalities while some information is simply for marketing purposes or to sell to companies.

SOCIAL NETWORKING Take caution when accepting virtual gifts and/or applications and clicking on links while on social networking sites. Don’t post anything that you wouldn’t say in front of your grandmother or that you wouldn’t stand up in front of church and say. Be very careful when posting pictures on social networking sites, as this can provide evidence of who you are, where you go to school, your home, where you like to hang out. Exposing your personal information online opens the door for predators and stalkers to easily find you and appeal to your interests, since they know so much about you via your social networking.

GENERAL ONLINE USE Avoid typing sensitive information (your name, phone number, account number, passwords, or home address) into a public computer. Spyware could be installed on the computer that records every keystroke. It is especially important to sign off or log off on a public computer.
