4 Hamlet and Ophelia: Painting Analysis!
Today, you’re going to analyze two paintings, each with a very different interpretation of Ophelia and her relationship with Hamlet. You will end up writing two paragraphs: In a short response, (1-2 paragraphs) compare and contrast how each artist portrays Ophelia in their paintings. Include at least two specific references to each painting (four total) in your response. Possible artistic elements to discuss include the artists’ respective uses of color, movement, lines, structure, facial features, objects and subject placement within the foreground and background, etc. Afterwards, write an analytical paragraph determining which painting is the most accurate to Shakespeare’s original text. Which do you feel best captures the relationship between Hamlet and Ophelia in the text and why? Be sure to use at least two pieces of textual evidence to back up your response, and refer to specific elements from your chosen painting.
