Learn about the unique collage work by Nikki Douthwaite. Learn to analyse her work both in written and visual formats. Learn to respond to her work producing a large-scale transcription collage piece of your own.

4 DOUTHWAITE Discussion
How do you think Douthwaite creates her pieces of work? She uses masses of small, hole-punched pieces of colour paper, placed side-by side and on top of each other, much in the same way the Pointillists painted with small dots of colour.

5 Task In order to produce your transcription piece, you will need to either: Select another of your photos that you took in the Rankin section or, Take a new photograph to work from. Your piece will be in grayscale, using only grey, white, cream and black paper. You can do a full or partial portrait or you could do a feature (such as an eye) but on a large scale.

6 Task YOU WILL WORK ON AN A2 PIECE OF PAPER TO DO THIS TASK.
FIRST, YOU WILL NEED TO HOLE PUNCH LOTS OF THE DIFFERENT COLOURED PAPER WHICH YOU WILL NEED TO USE. INITIALLY YOU WILL NEED TO SKETCH OUT THE IMAGE THAT YOU WISH TO PRODUCE, THEN BEGIN WITH SOME OF THE PALER COLOURS AND BEGIN ADDING THEM ON. YOU WILL NEED TO FREQUENTLY STAND BACK FROM YOUR WORK TO IDENTIFY AREAS WHICH NEED THE DIFFERENT TONES OF PAPER AND TO CHECK THAT THE PIECE IS WORKING EFFECTIVELY.

7 Peer-assessmenT GROUP CRITIQUE
Now you are approximately ½ way through the collage, blu-tack it onto a drawing board and rest this against the side so everyone can see it. Be prepared to answer the following about another person’s piece of work: Identify a piece which is successful and identify why this is so? Identify a piece where something could be further developed/improved, what is it and how could this be done? Self-evaluate your own whilst looking at the others and identify if there are any areas which would benefit from being developed.

8 Homework Douthwaite influence page:
Having looked at the work of Nikki Douthwaite and having responded to her work in your transcription, now produce an Influence Page in your sketchbook. Include the following: Lots of example images of her work. Information about the artist, though NOT biographical; get info about how she works, where she gets her influence/inspiration from etc. A piece of detailed written analysis (use the 4C model to help) of either just 1 piece, or about the collection of these types of collages. A smaller copy of a section of one of her pieces. This could perhaps be in colour to try this out. Include your opinion on her work.
