GIFTED GAZETTE 1.9 Oct. 9th - Oct. 12th What we’re learning this week… Spelling, Vocabulary, & Test Schedule Reading: Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor This week we will… Read chapters 4-8 and a non-fiction Animal Rights article make inferences (use clues/background knowledge to figure out what the author is NOT saying) identify important themes (the message) in Shiloh describe types of conflict found in the story Language/Writing: form and use possessive nouns Persuade readers to buy our MONSTER use a “mentor sentence” to apply grammar skills. continue writing opinion pieces, supporting our point of view with reasons Spelling: NONE (due to shortened week) Spelling will be assessed on writing rubric Math: This week we will… measure and estimate liquid volumes and masses of objects using grams, kilograms, and liters master 8’s facts with “Fluency Friday” speed test On Thursday Project of the Week (P.O.W.): Fall themed POW is due THURSDAY. ALL other First nine weeks P.O.W.’s are due on Tuesday. Research: We are asking our students to make one of their library book selections a nonfiction book about a dog breed (there are MANY to choose from in our library). We are looking forward to learning from Dr. Grasperge, our parent animal expert! On-Level Spelling: No spelling list this week due to shortened week- no school on Friday 10/13 (Teacher’s only record’s day/professional development)) Application of spelling will be assessed through the opinion writing rubric. Classical Roots Vocab.: Lesson 9 Review pages 37-39 Please practice on Quizlet. HUGE Thanks for supplying so many Oreos for our Persuasive Writing Lessons last week/this week. Please ask your child what the acronym stands for. Are you looking for extra practice with skills or accelerated learning topics geared specifically for your child’s level? Each student has a username and password and should be using this resource to maximize their learning potential. Log-in at home: Please get your fiction book approved by your teacher for your t-shirt book report due October 20th. Remember to complete the graphic organizer that was attached to the direction sheet and bring it to school on the 20th for your presentation to our class. We are nearing the end of our multiplication fluency tests. Please continue to study multiplication facts nightly! Our goal is 25 problems in 1 minute and 40 seconds to achieve mastery.
