1 Sensation & Perception

2

3 Sensation Colors do not really exist, the world of color is constructed by the sensory and perceptual process in the brain. We (our brain) do not experience the world directly, we experience it indirectly through filters, “our senses.” The inner world of sensation and perception is the only world we can EVER know. Our experience of the world is a psychological experience. That is all it can be. Sensation involves changing stimulation into a form the brain can understand, a neural signal.

4 Sensation Transduction: Sensory Adaptation: Absolute threshold:
A person’s threshold is NOT constant.

5

6 Signal Detection Theory
Sensation is not a simple present/absent, yes/no experience, it depends on many factors.

7 Vision

9 Visual Sensation In the retina: The Photoreceptors do the work. Rods:
Cones: Fovea: No more light: Bipolar cells gather the neural impulses and pass them onto the ganglion cells. Bundles of ganglion cells form the Optic nerve which takes the information to the brain. Blind spot:

12 Seeing Color Trichromatic theory: Opponent process theory:
These two together explain color vision.

16 What did you see? If you saw 15 then your color vision is normal.
