2 Background The Council of Trent was a series of meetings between Catholics Trent is a city in the Italian Peninsula Pope Paul III realized that the Protestant Reformation was spreading, so he helped organize these meetings This is part of the Counter-Reformation

They stopped attending by 1552 The Council of Trent was made up of three distinct periods

5 Purpose and Results Condemn principles of Protestantism
Define Catholic teachings The Catholic interpretation of the Bible was final

6 Salvation was achieved through faith and good deeds
A Pope can grant indulgences, but economic aspect phased out Latin was the universal language for worship

7 Indulgence An indulgence granted by authority of the Pope by Johann Tetzel in The text reads: "By the authority of all the saints, and in mercy towards you, I absolve you from all sins and misdeeds and remit all punishments for ten days."

Common people could get divorced, but could not remarry until their spouse passed away Pope Pius IV ratified the decisions of the council in 1564

These names will be different people from the Reformation Your job (without cheating) is to figure out who you are by asking your classmates a series of questions Even if someone guesses right, do not tell them if they are correct

Am I Catholic? Am I Protestant? Am I a Christian? Does anything bad happen to me? Do I do anything bad?

12 Mock Council of Trent This activity is not intended to change anyone’s religious views For our purposes, Protestants and Catholics will attend the council 1’s will be Lutheran, 2’s will be Calvinists, 3’s will be Zwingli and 4’s will be Catholics Your job is to determine 4 things you stand for in your respective religion (also include any books important to your faith) You will have about 10 minutes to prepare and then each religion will take turns pleading their case Make sure everyone is actively involved in the presentation
