1. What on Earth? Year 5 – Term 1 ENGLISH
As Writers, we will be using a range of different books which are set in contrasting locations around the world as stimulus for our work: ‘The Mysterious Traveller’ by Mal Peet; ‘Cinnamon’ by Neil Gaiman and ‘The Ice Bear’ by Jackie Morris. We will have the opportunity to write for a range of purposes from information texts on the different locations we have looked at, letters showing an understanding of what life would be like to live in such places and narratives showing a strong understanding of how to write descriptively and build to a full story using some of the challenges faced by living in places which experience such extremes as our problem.
MATHEMATICS
As Mathematicians, we will be developing our knowledge of money alongside our number operations (+, -, x, ÷) to calculate the cost of an expedition to the desert or the arctic. We will be calculating with increasing larger numbers and using our estimation skills to check our answers. We will also be learning about line graphs and how to create and interpret them. We will look at comparing different temperatures from the countries we are studying by using this method of data presentation.
ENGLISH
As Readers, we will be looking at a range of fiction and non-fiction texts linked to our topic. We will be developing our comprehension skills and using clues from the text to develop a secure understanding of what we are reading. We will also be looking at gathering information from texts which we can then apply to our own writing.
What on Earth?
Year 5 – Term 1
HISTORY
As Historians, we shall be carrying out a focused study on the Stone Age era. Initially, we will explore how we know that people lived during the Stone Age and what clues we have found that enable us to be able to build a strong picture about what life was like. We will be looking at the ways in which they survived and how they were dependent on the animals around them. We will make and taste Stone Age dishes and recreate art from this period in time. Later on in the term, we will explore Skara Brae.
P.E (Wednesday)
As Athletes, we will be improving our team work skills and completing various orienteering tasks which require us to work together effectively. We will also be completing our week block of swimming so children will ned their swimming kits every day of the w/b 17th September.
Please ensure that your child has a full PE kit including trainers. Children will be completing lessons outside if the weather is fine. DT
As Designers, we will be designing, making and evaluating fruit crumbles. We will carry out taste tests to work out what flavours are the best and use this to plan our own flavour combinations. Once complete we will take photographs and carry out evaluations to outline what we think went well and what we would change next time.
SCIENCE
As Scientists, we will be finding out all about forces and how they act in different situations. We will carry out investigations around friction, air resistance, gravity and water resistance. As a class we will discuss why these particular forces are so important to our daily lives and what different variable can impact on these forces for the better or for the worse.
GEOGRAPHY
As Geographers, we will learn about different contrasting countries that live in more extreme climates to what we are familiar with. As a class we will be looking at the Arctic and India (deserts). We will explore the physical and human features of these locations and how these impact on the animals and people who live there. We will conclude our study on these countries by looking at how they have changed over time and whether this will penultimately have a positive or negative impact on the human population.
ART
As Artists, we will be exploring art linked to the country of India and creating a range of Rangoli Patterns as well as experimenting with colour and collaging to create images of the desert landscape. We will also be creating various pieces using ice as our tool to create a different effect. Finally we will complete a contrasting piece between the 2 different landscapes we have studied.
Music
As Musicians, we will begin to learn to play the J-Sax.
