Logos, Ethos, and Pathos The Rhetorical appeals

2 In the following video, every time they use the phrase “rhetorical device,” replace it in your mind with “appeal.” Other than that, the video is pretty clear and simple.

3 Logos But how is logos created?
By crafting a clear thesis with solid evidence By quoting and citing reputable sources With statistics or facts By providing examples to back up claims By offering a counterargument, conceding a point, and refuting validity of opponents

4 ETHOS But how is ethos created?
By emphasizing shared values with the audience With sincerity Through experience with or expertise on the subject Using an honorific tone

5 pathos But how is pathos created?
By appealing to the audience’s basic emotions: fear pride loyalty pain faith/religion patriotism love sense of belonging sympathy shame

6 Where do the appeals fit in my reading log?
Purpose Effect When do I take these? After you read a section or entire passage What do I write down? Explain how this strategy proves the author’s thesis Explain how this strategy helps the author to achieve his purpose the emotional effect on the audience (pathos) the tone/image of the author (ethos) what audience is supposed to understand (logos) Right here!!!

7 But it’s not enough to just label the strategy as logos, ethos, or pathos. You must explain….

8 How does the strategy support the thesis?
How does the strategy help the author achieve his purpose? How does the strategy… Change the audience’s mind? Characterize the subject? Make the audience trust the author? Move the audience’s heart?

9 Essay prompt: Find one example of logos, one example of ethos, and one example of pathos from In Cold Blood, and explain their use in context. This means you should be able to explain how the appeal supports the author’s thesis about the death penalty or helps him to achieve his purpose of humanizing a killer. Due Wednesday.
