1 Welcome to Science 10 ! Here are the four major areas of study for this course: Sustaining Earth’s Ecosystems Chemical Reactions and Radioactivity Motion Energy Transfer in Natural Systems

2 Term Grades Student term grade will be determined by:
Assignments and Labs % Quizzes % Tests % 20% of your final grade is based on your performance on the provincial exam

3 Course Goals Improve attitudes towards science
Improve your scientific knowledge Have fun!

4 Tests Tests will be written at the conclusion of each Unit. You will be given several days notice for a test. Do all you can to be present on test days. Missed Tests -You will receive a “0” unless a written note is received from your parent explaining your absence -You must write the test on your first day back (unless other arrangements are made ahead of time) -You may write the test at lunch or after school

5 Quizzes Quizzes will be written frequently throughout the course. You will be given one day notice for quizzes. Missed quizzes cannot be made up, unless you have a valid note from a parent. Missed Quizzes You will receive a “0” unless a written note is received from your parent explaining your absence or lateness. With a valid note from a parent, you will be given a make up quiz on your first day back

6 Assignments and Labs Workbooks and Handouts will be checked daily.
Assignments and Labs include daily work, homework, project work, and lab write ups. If you attend everyday and do your assignments on time, you will have a very good chance to be successful in the course. Workbooks and Handouts will be checked daily. completed Workbooks on time receives a mark of 2 Late work receives a mark of 1 Incomplete work receives a mark of 0

7 Participation Participation/Attitude/Behaviour: Come to class with a friendly, relaxed and mature manner, but be prepared to work hard. Take an active role in class discussions and activities. There is nothing sadder than a student who refuses to do work in class and would rather sit and do nothing. It makes for a long and boring class. Believe it or not, time flies faster when you’re busy. “I’ll do the assignment for homework” is not a valid excuse for wasting yours and your teachers time during class.

8 Absences Absences: It is your responsibility to find out what was missed and take the proper steps to catch up! I suggest talking to a classmate and borrowing notes or see me at the beginning of class.

9 Notes on Plagiarism Extra Help Honesty is very important
Please do not make me question whether you have copied someone’s work Any homework/assignment/quiz/test that is copied will receive a mark of “0” If you have any questions please ask me Extra Help I am available for students everyday at lunch if arrangements are made before hand or else you might have difficulty finding me.

10 Class Expectations Come to class on time (you need a late slip if you arrive to class after the 2nd bell) Bring the required materials to class everyday: textbook, workbook, binder, paper, pen, pencil, eraser, and calculator* Respect is mutual: You respect me and your classmates, and I respect you – AT ALL TIMES. Raise your hand when you have a question.

11 Class Expectations No eating in class. This is a science room.
Keep the classroom clean: garbage goes in the garbage can! Ask to go to the washroom. If going to the washroom becomes a daily habit, the privilege will be revoked No Cell phones. Work hard. This includes: no chatting during lectures, completing work during allotted times, and taking neat and useable notes.

12 5 Things to Live by in Class
1. Take responsibility for your learning. Don’t waste class time. 2. Don't complain! Talk to me in a mature manner after class if you have a problem. 3. Play an active role in class. 4. Be good to each other. 5. Relax and have fun!
