Class Starter: Read Background & Purpose page 427. Summary: All 3 poems reflect on different aspects of work and the role it plays in people's lives. All 3 poems express an admiration for workers. The 1st poem celebrates the urbanization of Chicago in the 1900s. The 2nd poem reveals the purpose of work in a widow’s life. The 3rd poem describes the determination of a mother who used work to achieve her goal.

Review page 430 From lines 1-5, 18 & 21, cite 3 examples of words/phrases that personify the city of Chicago. In lines 14-17, list the 2 verbs used to convey (show) the city’s energy. In lines 23-26, what do the epithets in these lines suggest about Chicago? Epithets are descriptive words and phrases that are sometimes added to or substituted for a name. ADD TO GLOSSARY

02/02 – “Chicago” SWBAT analyze figurative language by citing evidence
Different kinds of workers, husky, big shoulders, mouth & teeth, ability to laugh, wrist, pulse, ribs, and a heart, ability to brag Shoveling, wrecking, planning, building, breaking, rebuilding The many different types of jobs they represent suggest that Chicago was a booming industrial city. Because the epithets were also used to begin the poem they emphasize the importance of workers.
