2 The “Fiumara of Tusa” or “Fiumara d’Arte” is an ancient riverbed where it is located a modern sculpture installation commissioned by Antonio Presti to the artist Pietro Consagra in honour of his father, in 1982. When the site was opened the artist presented his idea to create an open-air museum. The project was realised thanks to the works of Paolo Schiavocampo “A corner thrown to the shoulders of the time” and Tano Festa “The window by the sea” which were placed on the site.

3 During the following years other artworks were added to the open-air museum but they all were confiscated by the Italian authorities in 1989. Antonio Presti was charged with building abuse but he was defended by journalists and some members of the art world. The Italian parliament asked to the Minister for the Cultural and Environmental Heritage to “stop persecuting Antonio Presti for his artistic project because he had created an international relevant artistic, cultural and environmental district”.

4 In 1990, Presti was condemned to destroy Consagra’s artwork, to pay 23 million lire in fines and to stay fifteen days in jail anyway. He applied in appeal and he was not condemned again. The government tried to find a way to make legal the open-air museum. At the same time Presti built an hotel in the same place, commissioning to numerous artist the task to design the rooms.

5 In 1993 all artworks of the Fiumara risked again to be destroyed but the public opinion protested again against the legal decisions and, thanks to the collaboration of important cultural leaders the museum was safe again. However it was still not legally recognised by any judicial body and was also victim of deterioration. In 2005 Presti decided to put a towel on the “window by the sea” as a symbolic closure. The following year, thanks to the Italian Republic President, the Fiumara museum was legally recognised by the government and the “Window by the sea” could be opened again.
