Department of Environmental Health and Safety role is to enhance teaching and research at the University by fostering a healthy and safe work and study environment. Provide: Programs to oversee work with & disposal of hazardous materials, Safety training, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) to help ensure compliance with relevant legislation comment on pending legislation – concern about how it will impact your research and teaching

3 Your Safety Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations (OHSA): built on the principal of the Internal Responsibility System, which applies a shared responsibility to everybody in the workplace

4 Queen’s Safety Resources
Joint Health and Safety Committees Queen's University maintains ten Joint Health and Safety Committees that meet the legal requirements of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act. Worker members and management members inspect all workplaces annually. Departmental Safety Officer Conduit through which EH&S provides information to your Department: release of new or revised SOPs availability of safety courses assists supervisors in reporting incidents

5 Protecting Others – Your Role
Your role in the Internal Responsibility System complete your required training so you know: how to be safe your responsibility for others what training will be provided to your personnel through EH&S ensure that anyone you supervise is trained report incidents, near-misses, dangerous activities or unsafe conditions to your safety officer and/or Environmental Health and Safety

6 Orientation Safety Training
Required for all Faculty: Health & Safety Awareness duties, responsibilities, rights Orientation Checklist Combines Queen’s information and Departmental, location- specific information Complete with supervisor (or designate) A.S.A.P. & return to Departmental Safety Officer Bill 168 – Violence and Harassment (Human Resources) Supervisor Training Next session at the end of October

7 EH&S Training and Permits
Required where applicable: Office Safety First Aid WHMIS, Biosafety, Radiation, Xray/Laser Designated Substances Hoist & Crane Ladder Equipment Permits required: Radioisotopes and radioactive sealed sources Biohazards – microorganisms or material that might contain pathogens e.g. human blood and tissue

EH&S Policies & Procedures: Train your personnel and students using these Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) ensures compliance with legislation and with University policies EH&S will assist you to develop SOPs for other hazards that exist in your laboratory
