Presentation on theme: "What language are you expecting the students to use?"— Presentation transcript:

1 What language are you expecting the students to use?
What misconceptions might there be?

2 KS2-KS3 Transition A hop and a skip but no jump!
Simon Petri

3 Aims of the session Primary to Secondary – Collaboration is the key to success. Highlight 7 attributes in Maths that a student needs when starting Secondary School. Consider some examples of tasks and discuss what we are expecting from the students.

4 PASSING THE BATON NOT RESTARTING THE RACE!!

5 The Five Big Ideas

6

7

8 The Answer Is Only The Beginning
What it is What it’s not The very first drive, lacking the knowledge of what to do to get moving The practice, gaining confidence that you are able to drive The driving test, fairly competent but maybe not fully confident A few years on, it’s automatic, you don’t have to think about how to change gears or use the brake Later still, you could teach someone else how to drive

9 Misconceptions 1

10 Misconceptions 1

11 Students give conclusions - TALK MATHS
2 What are the factors of 45? “The factors of 45 are 1, 3, 5, 9, 15, 45” NOT “1, 3, 5, 9, 15, 45”

12 Precise language - used by students AND teachers
3 Used from Year 1 by teachers AND students factor factor product Cannot be simplified because 4 and 5 are CO-PRIME product factor factor

13 Commutative – Distributive - Associative - understanding keywords/key concepts can make a big difference 3

14 Efficiency and reasoning - explore, reason and find a strategy
4 Can you solve this problem by any other method? Which method is the most simple? Calculate: ( 5 9 − 3 9 )

15 The flow diagram of the addition and subtraction of fractions
Input same denominator Calculate Yes No Output Look for the lowest common denominator and find equivalent fractions Strategy 5

16 Interim methods - stepping stones that are visited for a short period of time
6 T U 2 5 7 x 4 3 1 H T U 2 5 7 x 1 3 H

17 Making Connections 7 Concrete to Abstract
Across topic areas to promote logical progression Between topic areas to see how the Maths links together

18 Link secure known knowledge to new abstract content….
7 If I know the area of a rectangle is base x height Then I know the area of this rectangle is either…. A = 5 x x + 2 x x A = 5x + 2x OR A = (5 + 2) x x A = 7 x x A = 7x Therefore…. 5x + 2x = 7x (collecting like terms) x cm 2 cm 5 cm

19 7 Links across a topic for progression….
Can you combine two congruent triangles to make a parallelogram? Think: What’s the relationship between each area of a triangle with the area of a parallelogram. Each area of a triangle is the half area of the parallelogram.

20 Not just find the area of the parallelogram…
Variation in area of parallelograms exercises… Not just find the area of the parallelogram… BUT…

21 What are we expecting from the students in the following examples?
Over to you… What are we expecting from the students in the following examples?

32 So where are we on this journey?
How can we get there?

33 Short term… vs Reasoning and Problem Solving skills
Must use precise language Explain their work and spot misconceptions Please don’t teach tricks Post SATs time

34 Long term… We need to work together
Decisions made with no dialogue are NOT in the best interest of the students!

35 Aims of the session Primary to Secondary – Collaboration is the key to success. Highlight 7 attributes in Maths that a student needs when starting Secondary School. Consider some examples of tasks and discuss what we are expecting from the students.

36 Thank you for listening
