5 What happens During the Cell Cycle?
Scroll down to mitosis and cell division 3:36 During the cell cycle, a cell grows, prepares for division, and divides into two new cells, which are called “daughter cells”. Cell Cycle Stage 1: Interphase This is the stage before cell divison. The cell grows, makes an exact copy of its DNA in its nucleus in a process called replication , and prepares to divide into two cells.

6 Centrioles Pairs Centrioles Structures that help an animal cell divide into two new cells. The centrioles are duplicated.

7 Chromosomes Threadlike structures made of DNA and protein within the nucleus are called chromosomes. At the end of replication, the cell contains two identical sets of chromosomes.

8 Stage 2:Mitosislong version (15:00)
Mitoisis consists of 4 phases: Remember “PMAT” Prophase * Metaphase * Anaphase * Telophase Short version – 1:18

9 Prophase Chromosomes in the nucleus condense.
The pairs of centrioles move to opposite sides of the nucleus. Spindle fibers form bridge between the ends of the cell. The nuclear envelope breaks down.

10 Metaphase Each chromosome attaches to a spindle fiber
at its centromere. What is missing from the cell??? Nucleus What happened to the chromosomes? They moved to the center of the cell.

11 Anaphase The centromere of each chromosome splits, pulling down the chromatids apart. Each chromatid is now a single, unreplicated chromosome. These chromosomes are drawn by their spindle fibers to opposite ends of the cell. The cell stretches out.

12 The last phase of mitosis
Telephase The last phase of mitosis The chromosomes decondense . The nuclear envelope forms around the the 2 separate nuclei. Cell is pinching in around its middle

13 Stage 3: Cytokinesis As cytokinesis continues, the cell splits into two daughter cells. Each daughter cell ends up with an identical set of chromosomes and about half the organelles of the parent cell.
