Life on board a ship Lesson Objective: To be able to describe the lives of sailors on ships during the Age of Exploration

Very small ships Every ship had a captain, master and navigator Master – responsible for the daily running of the ship Navigator – steered the ship Many ships travelling together - fleet

Time No clocks on board Used an hour glass
Jobs on board: Cook, carpenter, boatswain (look after sails)

Food Ships had to carry enough food for one or two years
Some went bad or was eaten by rats Water had to be rationed Sea biscuits - hardtack Dried meat

Careening a ship When a ship needed work it was docked
Had to work with the tides to do this

Disease Disease spread very easily on board a ship Typhoid Scurvy
