1 Life on board a ship Lesson Objective: To be able to describe the lives of sailors on ships during the Age of Exploration

2 Very small ships Every ship had a captain, master and navigator Master – responsible for the daily running of the ship Navigator – steered the ship Many ships travelling together - fleet

3 Time No clocks on board Used an hour glass
Jobs on board: Cook, carpenter, boatswain (look after sails)

4 Food Ships had to carry enough food for one or two years
Some went bad or was eaten by rats Water had to be rationed Sea biscuits - hardtack Dried meat

5 Careening a ship When a ship needed work it was docked
Had to work with the tides to do this

6 Disease Disease spread very easily on board a ship Typhoid Scurvy
