3 Geography The islands are actually the tops of mountains.
Earthquakes occur Only a small amount of land can be farmed. This farmland has been fought over for centuries. Many Japanese make a living from the sea. The seas keep Japan isolated from rest of Asia. It is a strongly independent civilization.

7 The First Settlers The first people to settle probably came from NE Asia around 20,000 years ago. 300 BC the Yayoi brought farming to Japan & were the ancestors of the Japanese. AD 500s the Yamato clan ruled most of Japan. They claimed to be descended from a sun goddess. Legend says her grandson Jimmu was the first emperor of Japan.

11 Prince Shotoku 600 AD – A Yamato prince named Shotoku ruled Japan on behalf of his aunt. He created a Constitution, or a plan of government. Emperor was all-powerful. Japanese expected to obey him Used Confucianism He admired Chinese civilization and wanted the Japanese to learn from it. They studied Buddhism and Chinese art, philosophy and medicine. After his death, they continued to use China as a model for Japan. The Taika, or Great Change – Japan was divided into districts All farmland under Emperor’s control. Government collected taxes. Japan’s first strong central government.
