1 Poetry Literary Terms

2 Alliteration Repetition of the consonant sound
Example: “Sister Susie sitting on a thistle.”

3 Free Verse Poetry that does not have regular meter or rhyme scheme.
Example: I heard a Fly buzz – when I died – The Stillness in the Room Was like the Stillness in the Air – Between the Heavens of Storm –

4 Imagery Language that appeals to the senses. Example:
A host of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze

5 Internal Rhyme Rhyme that occurs within a line of poetry or within consecutive lines. Example: “I bring fresh showers for the thirsting flowers.”

6 Meter A pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in poetry.
Example: Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,

7 Mood The overall emotion created by a work of literature.
Setting, word choice, sound effects, rhythm all contribute to a story’s or poem’s mood.

8 Onomatopoeia Words that imitate the sounds associated with the object or action they refer to. Example: “A tap at the pane, the quick sharp scratch And blue spurt of a lighted match.”

9 Refrain Repetition of a line or a phrase, usually at the end of a stanza. Example: “Sigh no more, ladies, sigh nor more; Men were deceivers ever; One foot in sea and one on shore, To one thing constant never; Then sigh not so, But let them go, And be you blithe and bonny…”

10 Rhyme Repetition of the same or similar sounds at the end of two or more words most often at the ends of lines. Example: O Captain my Captain! our fearful trip is done; A The ship has weathered every rack, the prize we sought is won; A The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting, B While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring: B But O heart! heart! heart! C O the bleeding drops of red, D Where on the deck my Captain lies, E Fallen cold and dead. D
