2 Comparing Households and Industries
Families make their own products Families trade their goods for goods made by other families Worked on their property INDUSTRIES People worked in places outside their home Products were sold in markets and shops People used money to buy their products People sold their products for profit

3 The North and The South NORTH Cities grew
People started to work for money Specialized industries Formed Unions SOUTH Rural – farms and countryside Cotton industry 60% of African American Slaves worked on large cotton plantations Most owners saw slaves as property

4 The Technological Revolution
Daily Life in 1865 No electricity No refrigeration Slow communication Daily life in 1900 New products like typewriters and sewing machines Railroads Telephone Electric Power

5 Slavery In support of slavery In opposition to slavery
Slaves as regular human beings and not property. Equal rights for all and treated fair. In support of slavery Treated slaves as property Thomas Dew: “they were happy and contented” in the speech in 1832.

6 Conclusion Industries and technology changed they way they lived in the 1800’s The North was open minded , fair and willing to change and had a different way of life because of their industries. Therefore slaves were free.
