I am population! L/O: All: To describe the growth of world population over time. (D/E grade) Most: To identify any causes and effects of population growth. (B/C grade) Some: To recognise the connections between the causes and effects of population growth. (A*/A grade)

World Population Growth
What has happened to the world’s population and why?
3
Population Change Task 1: Answer these questions:
Year Population (billion) Population (billion) 1100 500,000,000 0.5 1650 750,000,000 0.75 1820 1,000,000,000 1 1930 2,000,000,000 2 1960 3,000,000,000 3 1974 4,000,000,000 4 1987 5,000,000,000 5 1999 6,000,000,000 6 2012 7,000,000,000 7 Task 1: Answer these questions: 1a) Plot a line graph using the following population data (Use the last column data) b) Add arrows and the following labels to your line graph Slow population growth Population Explosion Rapid population growth 2. Describe the growth in population from 1100 to 1650 1650 to 1930 1930 to 2000 Extension: Calculate the population increase per year between each of the dates and comment on the rate of population increase.

Why is this graph wrong?

What is this picture trying to say?
Get students to discuss in pairs for 2 mins then discuss as a class. This will help you lead into the next activity of trying to identify causes and effects of population and all the connections. What is this picture trying to say?

Why is Population Growing Rapidly?
There is a huge reduction in the death rate in LICs This means world population will reach 9bn by 2050 Of this 60% will live in Asia, 20% in Africa, 9% in South America and only 7% in Europe (a decline) In 1900 the population of Europe was 3 times that of Africa but by 2050 this will have reversed
8
How is Population Going to Change in the Future?
In % of the global population lived in LICs/MICs but this will rise to 90% by 2050 In the long term the population will start to stabilise and be 9.7bn in 2050 and 10.5bn by 2100 However, some believe that it will reach 12bn before it stabilises It is very difficult to predict what will actually happen as others believe that falling birth rates will see world population start to fall in 50 years time Birth rates are already dropping in Western Europe and Japan and population of some countries (e.g. Sweden and Italy) has actually dropped However, they may start to rise again in HICs as there may be a shortage of people to do the work needed

Everything is connected!!
With population having reached 7 billion in late 2011 and expected grow to 9-10 billion by 2050, one cannot ignore the far-reaching impact of our numbers on virtually every aspect of life on earth. ‘’7 Billion People and Growing Task 2: Create a mind map showing the connections between causes of global population growth and the effects is has on the planet (think about environmental, economic and social impacts). You may want to provide an example, such as, ‘more people’…might mean ‘more cars on the road’ or ‘more houses’. Explain to the students that there are no right or wrong answers but they may be asked to explain their proposed connections. Also remind them that the cause and effect can be positive, negative or neutral. Extension: Using different colours, categorise the causes and effects into positive and negative. Are there more positive or negative outcomes? What evidence in the news do you see for this? What are Your thoughts on the causes and effects of population growth?

Class Population Connection mind map
‘’7 Billion People and Growing As a class get students to come up (or you do it) and add the connections to the white board/A3 sugar paper. They can add their own or add onto someone else's. For each concept a student adds, he/she should draw arrows to any other concepts that form a cause and effect relationship. The object is for the class to create an interconnected web.

Lets look at the L/Os to see how well you did.
Celebrate! Lets look at the L/Os to see how well you did. Can you? All: To describe the growth of world population over time. (E) Most: To identify any causes and effects of population growth. (C) Some: To recognise the connections between the causes and effects of population growth. (A) Write a comment under today's work to say: What grade you reached. What went well Why What could be improved.
