7. Why is Population Growing Rapidly?
There is a huge reduction in the death rate in LICs
This means world population will reach 9bn by 2050
Of this 60% will live in Asia, 20% in Africa, 9% in South America and only 7% in Europe (a decline)
In 1900 the population of Europe was 3 times that of Africa but by 2050 this will have reversed

8. How is Population Going to Change in the Future?
In % of the global population lived in LICs/MICs but this will rise to 90% by 2050
In the long term the population will start to stabilise and be 9.7bn in 2050 and 10.5bn by 2100
However, some believe that it will reach 12bn before it stabilises
It is very difficult to predict what will actually happen as others believe that falling birth rates will see world population start to fall in 50 years time
Birth rates are already dropping in Western Europe and Japan and population of some countries (e.g. Sweden and Italy) has actually dropped
However, they may start to rise again in HICs as there may be a shortage of people to do the work needed

9. Everything is connected!!
With population having reached 7 billion in late 2011 and expected grow to 9-10
billion by 2050, one cannot ignore the far-reaching impact of our numbers on
virtually every aspect of life on earth.

Task 2:
Create a mind map showing the connections between causes of global population
growth and the effects is has on the planet (think about environmental, economic
and social impacts).
You may want to provide an example, such as, ‘more people’…might mean ‘more cars on the road’ or ‘more houses’. Explain to the students that there are no right or wrong answers but they may be asked to explain their proposed connections. Also remind them that the cause and effect can be positive, negative or neutral.
Extension:
Using different colours, categorise the causes and effects into positive and negative. Are there more positive or negative outcomes? What evidence in the news do you see for this? What are Your thoughts on the causes and effects of population growth?
