8 Human Structures Activity (5 minutes)
On ONE piece of paper, try to figure out how the function of each structure in the human body relates to the function of a plant structure. Bones: Stem Cells: Cardiovascular System: Epidermis:

Humans Plants Student, predict how growth occurs in plants? Student can you unpack what the first student said? Student, can you predict how excretion occurs in plants? Student, can you support what the first student said Growth and repair Excretion (sweating, using the bathroom) Digesting food Reproduction

10 Growth What is it: Cells divide to make new cells. Plant gets taller, wider, roots deeper. How plant structure relates to function: Meristematic tissue at top of stem and root cap, as plant gets taller, roots grow deeper into ground

11 Reproduction What is it: Sexual reproduction, making more plants. How plant structure relates to function: Flowers are bright colors to attract pollinators, male and female parts close together

12 Cellular Respiration What is it: Release energy in cells. How plant structure relates to function: Happens in all cells in the plant, all cells need energy!

13 Photosynthesis What is it: Makes food (sugar called glucose) How plant structure relates to function: Leaves are wide and flat to capture sunlight, vascular tissue transports food to all parts of plant

14 Transpiration Transpiration: process of water evaporating from the inside of the leaf to the atmosphere What is it: “leaf sweat”= water released Water is absorbed by roots, carried by Xylem to the leaf via capillary action. Stomata opens and close.

16 Stomata Open when guard cells are full of water, closed when guard cells do not have enough water

18 Notebook Output ***In your notebook answer the following question: Explain the process of transpiration in a plant by incorporating the following terms: roots, stem, leaves, capillary action, leaves, stomata and guard cells.
