1 Integrated Physics Chemistry Week 7- Lesson 4 Electronegativity
Ms. Hartsell, Ms. Mac, Mr. Wanninkhof, Mr. Wald

2 Do Now Directions: Silently walk to your assigned seat and complete your What is 1 similarity between ionic and covalent bonds? What is one difference?

3 Exploring Electronegativity
Agenda Do Now Exploring Electronegativity Benchmark Lesson Activity List

4 Students will be able to…
Learning Objectives Students will be able to… -Predict the type of bond that forms between two atoms with the electronegativity - Define electronegativity based on atom’s atomic structure

5 Activity 1: Ion Explore Directions: Complete the chart on your worksheet in order to explore electronegativity. Then follow the questions that come after to create a definition for electronegativity with your group! Time: 10 minutes

6 Activity 1: Ion Explore

7 Benchmark Lesson Share out: What was your group’s definition of “electronegativity?” Support your definition of information from the table!

8 Benchmark Lesson Electronegativity is a measure of the tendency of an atom to attract a bonding pair of electrons. Electronegativity represents how much an atom wants to gain an electron.

9 Benchmark Lesson Fluorine is the most electronegative- wants to gain the electron the most! Francium is the least electronegative- want to gain the least.

10 Benchmark Lesson We can use the electronegativities to determine if an ionic or covalent bond is going to form between the atoms in a compound.

11 Benchmark Lesson Finding the difference between the electronegativity values! If the difference is less than 1.7 = covalent Difference greater than 1.7 = ionic!

12 Benchmark Lesson Example: N and O Step 1: N electronegativity = 3.0
Step 2: O electronegativity = 3.5 Step 3: Difference = = -0.5 Step 4: Important! Take absolute value! = +0.5 Step 5: Type of bond? +0.5 is less than 1.7 = Covalent Bond!

13 Benchmark Lesson Check for Undestanding!
What is the bond between F and Na? Step 1: Na electronegativity = Step 2: F electronegativity = Step 3: Difference = Step 4: Important! Take absolute value! = Step 5: Type of bond?

14 Benchmark Lesson Check for Undestanding!
What is the bond between F and Na? Step 1: Na electronegativity = 0.9 Step 2: F electronegativity = 4.0 Step 3: Difference = = -3.1 Step 4: Important! Take absolute value! = +3.1 Step 5: Type of bond? 3.1 is greater than 1.7 = IONIC BOND

15 Activity List Directions: Choose and complete at least 2 of the following activities: Reading and Questions Video and QAD Chart Practice Problems
