Warm-Up Complete your handout from “There Will Come Soft Rains” – Remember, you need 10 total and you MUST CITE TEXTUAL EVIDENCE for every answer. You have 15 minutes to work; then it is due.

Book Covers What goes on the cover of a book? What makes it special/memorable/significant?

Congratulations! You have been hired by Penguin Publishing Company to design a book jacket for a new release of one of the following dystopian texts: “Harrison Bergeron”/”2081,” “2BR02B,” or “There Will Come Soft Rains.” Penguin wants the cover to represent the THEMES and MORAL QUESTIONS surrounding the story, rather than just a simple image depicting the plot or the characters.

Back Cover You must also write the book jacket “summary” that will be found on the back cover. This summary must give an overview of the story that attracts readers to want to find out about the story, but does not give away the ending. You want to leave them hanging so that they will read it!

What Else… For the purposes of getting a grade, you will also do these two things INSIDE your book: Write a one-paragraph explanation about WHY you think your chosen story is the best example of dystopia so far. Make sure you back up your answer by including the specific characteristics of dystopia that you see in this story. Write a BRIEF (2-3 sentences) explanation of your cover art. Make sure you explain how your cover relays the themes and moral questions present in the story.

Book Jacket Requirements
To summarize, make sure you do/have all of the following: Pick one: “Harrison Bergeron,” “2BR02B,” or “There Will Come Soft Rains” (tip: pick the best dystopia) Front Cover: Design ORIGINAL (you draw it) cover art that represents a theme and/or moral question surrounding the story Back Cover: Write a summary of the story for your back cover Inside: Write a one-paragraph explanation of why your story is a great representation of dystopia. Back yourself up by explaining which characteristics of a dystopia it shows. Inside: Write 2-3 sentences explaining your cover art and how it represents a theme and/or moral question.
