Web-based library services in India: The Changing Pattern

Introduction In this knowledge driven society the value of information and knowledge is tremendous. Web-based Library Services is the extension of modern ICT based services. It will help to provide library services provided using internet as medium and library website as a gateway with the help of integrate library management system. Among the web based library services online textbooks, databases, tutorials and a virtual library of links to other useful resources are included.

Background Web based services and applications through Web 2.0 technology in education changed the scenario of the society. With the help of Web 2.0 technology – Application like Blogs, wikis, multimedia objects, podcasting, content tagging, and online learning object are quite common features of the present education system. Presently the users can access the resources from outside using the authentication system. To effectively use search services libraries use website as the prime gateway for providing such services along with modern web 2.0 services. Web Based Services, Digital Library Services, Internet Library Services and Electronic Library Services are terms used synonymously.

Objectives To identify the categories of web based library services;
To find out the number of social networking tools available and used in the library webpage of universities of India; To find out the library instructions available in the library webpage; To trace the availability of web based library information services in the Institutions/university libraries of India; To find out the modern tools available in the webpage; To show the nature of the modern web based guides available in the Institutes/university libraries of India; To suggest suitable measure to remove the bottlenecks in regard to web based library services.

Methodology NIRF(Over All) Ranking: 2018 has been chosen as the base material for this study. It ranks 100 universities or institutes of India. For the purpose of the study first 50 institutes have been selected for the study. The present study consists of different research methods like literature review, content analysis and online survey. After collection of information the respective information has been put into the pre- defined data sheets prepared in MS-Excel. Different kinds of filtering mechanisms are used to retrieve the appropriate and required information. Based on the data sheets in Excel different kinds of tables have been prepared considering different points of view.

Conclusion The modern libraries have now become evident of availability of web based library services through the library webpage. Library professionals should put more emphasis to address the web design and implementation issues. The delivery of the service becomes more active, efficient and quick using modern web based technologies. The study clearly reveals that the library webpage greatly used social networking tools for the interaction. Thus it is expected the library professionals should come forward and take proper initiatives to provide web based library services.
