1 Halogens By Arnav Patel

2 What are Halogens? Halogens are elements that are found in the VIIth group of the periodic table Since they are in group VII they all have a Valency of -1

3 Elements The elements in the group are : Fluorine- F9 -2,7
Chlorine- Cl17 -2,8,7 Bromine- B35 -2,8,18,7 Iodine- I53 – 2,8,18,8,8,8,1 Astatine- At85 – 2,8,18,32,8,8,8,1

4 Elements

5 State of Matter Halogens can be found in the form of all three states of matter-solids, liquids, gas Fluorine and chlorine are found in the gas form Iodine and astatine are found in the solid form Bromine is found in the liquid form

6 Iron + bromine iron (III) bromide. 2Fe(s) + 3Br2 (l) 2FeBr3(s)
Reaction with metals When Halogens react with metals they form the metal salt Halogen literally means salt former Iron + bromine         iron (III) bromide. 2Fe(s) +    3Br2 (l)              2FeBr3(s) These then form large structures known as metal halides
