1 Law 13 6 11 4 1 Free Kicks

2 Objectives At the end of this lesson the student will:
list the elements necessary for a correctly taken free kick state the two exceptions to placing the ball at the point of infraction state an exception to the 10 yard requirement state the difference between a DFK and IFK

3 DEFINITION OF A FREE KICK
“The way play is restarted after the referee has stopped play for an offence or infringement”

4 THERE ARE ONLY 2 TYPES OF FREE KICKS
Direct Free Kick IFK (Indirect Free Kick)

5 DIRECT FREE KICK GOAL! One of the 11 DFK fouls
B A One of the 11 DFK fouls Can score directly against opponent Outside penalty area of offending team

6 INDIRECT FREE KICK GOAL! One of the 8 IFK offenses
B A One of the 8 IFK offenses Cannot score directly against opponent Must touch another player!

7 FREE KICK “RULES” Ball must be stationary Kicked in any direction
No “double touch” No encroachment Restart signal requirements “Quick” restart “Ceremonial” restart Cannot score directly against self Point of infraction (2 exceptions)

8 GOAL AREA REQUIREMENTS
Exception #1 If given to a team within own goal area, can be moved to anywhere in goal area. All opponents must be out of penalty area * Ball must clear penalty area prior to 2nd touch

9 GOAL AREA REQUIREMENTS
Exception #2 IFK in opponent’s goal area is moved out to the nearest point on the goal area line

10 PENALTY AREA REQUIREMENTS
Also, if given to a team within their own penalty area All opponents must be out of penalty area * Ball must clear penalty area prior to 2nd touch

11 * CHANGE 2018 Attacker in or entering the PA before a defensive FK has left the area cannot play or challenge for the ball until it has been touched by another player Additional and amended text If, when a free kick is taken quickly by the defending team from inside its penalty area, any opponents are inside the penalty area because they did not have time to leave, the referee allows play to continue. If an opponent who is in the penalty area when the free kick is taken, or enters the penalty area before the ball is in play, touches or challenges for the ball before it has touched another player, the free kick is retaken. Explanation This change makes the requirements for a defensive free kick in the penalty area consistent with the requirements at a goal kick (Law 16).

12 POSITION OF FREE KICKS All free kicks are taken from the place where the infringement occurred except: Free kicks for offences involving a player entering, re-entering or leaving the field of play without permission are taken from the position of the ball when play was stopped. However, if a player leaves the field of play as part of play and commits an offence against another player, play is restarted with a free kick taken on the boundary line nearest to where the offence occurred; for direct free kick offences, a penalty kick is awarded, if this is within the offender’s penalty area.

13 Law 13 – Free Kicks The Law change permits substitutes, substituted and sent off players, and team officials to be penalized with a free kick for offenses.

14 “QUICK” FREE KICK Kicking team has a right to a quick restart if they wish to use it Opponents must retire 10 yards Opponents have no right to form a wall The referee should: move quickly out of the way after indicating the area of the restart do nothing to interfere with the “quick” restart delay the restart only when requested by the kicking team

15 “QUICK” FREE KICK However, if misconduct has occurred:
Referee must act quickly to delay the restart Referee must record the info and show card Even if one team or the other would benefit from this delay Must signal for the restart (whistle) Hand signal if IFK

16 “QUICK” FREE KICK GUIDELINES
If a player takes a free kick quickly and an opponent who is less than 9.15 m (10 yds) from the ball intercepts it, the referee allows play to continue. - The kicker or kicker’s team may not claim infringement if they kick ball to the opponent However, an opponent who deliberately prevents a free kick being taken must be cautioned for delaying the restart of play. (If the Infringing opponent moves toward the ball and blocks the kick) - Caution player - retake kick

17 “CEREMONIAL” FREE KICK
Organized “defensive wall” Clearly show kicker to wait for whistle Be “first brick” in the wall - 10 yards Bring opponents to you Move to your next position Signal for restart When you are ready As soon as possible

18 ENCROACHMENT 10 yards in all directions Failure to respect
the required distance is a cautionable offense

19 ENCROACHMENT Opponents must retire 10 yards with one exception, if they’re between goalposts and on the goal line.

20 RESTART MECHANICS Point direction! Indicate IFK if appropriate
Players want/need to know if they are “attacking” or “defending” Indicate IFK if appropriate Players want/need to know if they can score directly from this kick Indicate position of ball

21 RESTART MECHANICS Position yourself Allow quick kick to be taken
Watch for encroachment Act, if encroachment makes a difference Indicate IFK if appropriate Retake IFK if arm wasn’t raised and the ball enters the goal Use whistle if “ceremonial” kick

22 BALL IN PLAY VS. GOAL SCORED
Ball is “in play” when: Kicked and clearly moves and Leaves penalty area (if appropriate) Goal can be scored when: Ball is “in play” Ball is touched by 2nd player on IFK Ball is kicked into opponents’ goal
