1 Methods of Gut Content Analysis

2 Occurrence Method The number of stomachs in which a particular food item (i.e. a particular species) as a percentage of the total number of stomachs is determined. Dominance Method The food items are graded and expressed according to the degree of their dominance. Numerical Method Food item is expressed as percentage of the total number of food organisms in the stomachs examined.

3 Volumetric Method Food item expressed as a percentage of the total volume of the stomach contents. Gravimetric Method Food item is expressed as a percentage of the total weight of stomach contents. Points Method Each category is then allotted a number of points and all the points gained by each food item are summed and expressed as percentage of the total points. It is rapid, easy and requires no special apparatus; with experience, this method could be very accurate.
