Plans and Elevations

Starter Faces are the sides of a 3D shape
Edges are just the edges (obvious!) Vertices are the corners of a 3D shape How many of each to the following have? Cuboid Triangular Prism Octahedron F = 6 F = 5 F = 8 E = 12 E = 10 E = 12 V = 8 V = 6 V = 6
3
Plans and Elevations We have looked at a variety of 2D shapes
We are now going to move onto 3D shapes We are going to be learning to draw plans and elevations, which are 2D drawings of 3D shapes
4
Plans and Elevations The Plan view is the ‘overhead’ view of a shape or area They are often used by estate agents to show customers the layout of a building
5
Plans and Elevations The ‘front elevation’ is the view if you were standing directly in front of the object or building The ‘side’ elevation is the view from the side of the object It is not always obvious which way round these are – pay attention to the question! Front elevation Side elevation

Plans and Elevations Draw the following shape as viewed from the 3 sides indicated. Plan Plan (from above) Direction A Direction B B A Directions A and B are the ‘Front’ and ‘Side’ elevations (check which way round they are labelled!)

Summary We have looked at drawing 3D shapes in 2D
We have looked at ‘plans’, as well as viewing a shape from other directions We also saw how to draw a shape from a plan
