Alternative Pathways to Learning
Traditional Classes, Course by Conference, and Online Last Updated August 2018
2
Objectives Students will…
Know the difference between online, course by conference, and traditional classes Understand the expectations for each, depending on individual circumstances, academic ability, and availability of resources Be able to commit to a learning path that will help in the journey toward graduation @jptsuccessacademy @jptsacademy @JPprincipal671
3
Alternative Pathways: The Options
Traditional Classes MUST report to school daily Online Classes Completely online, no need to report on campus Course by Conference Away from school, with a day (or two) of classes on campus @jptsuccessacademy @jptsacademy @JPprincipal671
4
Alternative Pathways: Definitions
Traditional Classes Classes all ON CAMPUS, in the classroom Face to face interaction with teachers Face to face interaction with peers Start (6:45am) and end time (1:30pm) everyday @jptsuccessacademy @jptsacademy @JPprincipal671
5
Alternative Pathways: Definitions
Course by Conference: Classes online, with a commitment of ONE (or TWO) days of attendance IN THE CLASSROOM, where student will meet with the teacher and/or receive instruction as needed Weekly attendance is mandatory Weekly submission of assignments is expected Teacher may provide work via @jptsuccessacademy @jptsacademy @JPprincipal671
6
Alternative Pathways: Definitions
Online Classes: Classes completely ONLINE The teacher provides work via Students submits work via Communication between teacher-student done via @jptsuccessacademy @jptsacademy @JPprincipal671
7
Course by Conference (CBC) and Online Classes are NOT for everyone
It CAN be an option if… You have a job and are working hours that don’t allow for you to be present for traditional classes You are the primary caretaker for a family member You have extenuating circumstances beyond your control You are currently enrolled in ground classes and want to advance your credit recovery efforts @jptsuccessacademy @jptsacademy @JPprincipal671
8
EVEN if you meet the criteria for CBC or online classes,
You MUST PROVIDE EVIDENCE of need and ABILITY @jptsuccessacademy @jptsacademy @JPprincipal671
9
What Evidence? If you are working, YOU MUST submit a weekly work schedule to the Online/CBC facilitator (Mrs. Serisola) If you are caring for a family member, you must be able to provide details when asked and be open to a home visit For extenuating circumstances, provide documentation as requested (case-by-case basis) Current teachers approve your request for CBC or online, as you’ve demonstrated the ability to work responsibly and independently @jptsuccessacademy @jptsacademy @JPprincipal671
10
CBC or Online Classes might not be suitable for you if are UNABLE…
To access the Internet on a daily basis To commit to your ‘conference’ date at JPTSA once or twice a week (for course by conference) To work independently To submit assignments WEEKLY To maintain a score of 2.5 or an average of 85% or greater You are unable to stay in contact with your teacher(s) AND facilitator DAILY (via telephone OR ) @jptsuccessacademy @jptsacademy @JPprincipal671
11
Traditional Classes PROS CONS
Daily attendance and punctuality is expected which may be problematic if competing with employment or familial obligations PROS Daily instruction and practice Face to face interaction with teachers Social interaction with peers Immediate feedback and assistance Opportunities for additional supports CONS @jptsuccessacademy @jptsacademy @JPprincipal671
12
Course by Conference PROS CONS
Required to SIT IN in a class session with EACH CBC teacher on a weekly basis (once or twice depending on CBC course load) Minimal face-to-face interaction Need to learn on your own Increased personal responsibility Requires diligence and self-motivation Requires TIME and time management Possible network challenges PROS Able to continue doing what you need to do outside of school (work, care for family) Only attend class once or twice a week (depending on CBC course load) Study on your own time, at your own pace Maximize course load (for those approved to advance credit recovery efforts) CONS @jptsuccessacademy @jptsacademy @JPprincipal671
13
Online Classes PROS CONS No face-to-face interaction
Need to learn on your own Increased personal responsibility Requires diligence and self-motivation Requires TIME and time management Possible network challenges PROS Flexible scheduling Possibility for quicker completion Study on your own time, at your own pace Continue to do what you need to do: work, care for family, etc. CONS @jptsuccessacademy @jptsacademy @JPprincipal671
14
Expectations for CBC 2-way communication between student AND facilitator on a weekly basis Attend ALL enrolled CBC classes at least once a week Attend CBC class during its scheduled block/period - DO NOT JUST POP IN TO CLASSES While in attendance for weekly sessions, be active participants in the learning Complete all assignments and submit when due, or as agreed upon by all parties Complete all assessments as required Complete assignments with integrity (no cheating/plagiarism) @jptsuccessacademy @jptsacademy @JPprincipal671

Still interested? You must FIRST get approval from your teachers
Check your graduation status to see if it is a class you really do need You may be required to take a Math and Reading Assessment to determine your current level(s) Get approval from the Counselor Ensure that you complete this Orientation AND complete the online orientation questionnaire (the link) Sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Counselor Submit any documentation as requested (remember the section on ‘Evidence’? - work schedule, etc.) @jptsuccessacademy @jptsacademy @JPprincipal671
