1
What is Biology? The study of life!
If it is living, then biologists study it. Bacteria Protists Fungi Plants Animals
2
All living things have characteristics in common!
Remember: Go C Her OR Go Cher!! You know Cher! “Do you believe in life after love…” Anyway… Grow – All living things can grow. Organized – All living things are organized from simple to more complex. Cells – All living things are made of at least one cell. Homeostasis – All living things have some way to keep a balanced internal environment. Energy – All living things use energy. Reproduce – All living things can reproduce.
3
Organization and Patterns
Biologists love to organize because life is naturally organized!! Remember! One characteristic that all living things have in common is that they are all ORGANIZED.
4
Atom (helium)
5
Atoms are organized into Molecules
6
Molecules are organized into Macromolecules (DNA)
7
Macromolecules are organized into Organelles (nucleus)
8
Organelles are organized into Cells (animal cell)
9
Cells are organized into tissues
10
Tissues are organized into organs
11
Organs are organized into Organ Systems
12
Organ systems are organized into Organisms
13
Plants are organisms too
14
It doesn’t stop there! Ecology
Some scientists, called ecologists, take things a step further. They look at how the whole world is organized! The study of interactions that take place between the living and nonliving environment is known as Ecology.
15
All of the organisms that belong to a single species and that live in an area are known as a Population (of humans)
16
Population of White Pine trees
17
All of the populations in an area are known as a Community.
18
Community – What are some populations in the Loganville community?
19
All of the living and nonliving components of an environment are known as an Ecosystem (lake)
20
Ecosystem
21
Biotic – Anything that is living or was once living.
What are some examples of biotic things? Abiotic – Anything that has never been alive. What are some examples of abiotic things?
22
The area on and around the earth that can support life is known as the Biosphere. It includes the crust, water, and atmosphere.
23
Biosphere
