Down gauging Case Study: Nestle Water bottles
Down gauging of plastic is the thinning of the plastic by using less but stronger material without effecting the integrity of the properties. Case Study: Nestle Water bottles -2006 water bottle made of 14.6 grams of plastic -2012 water bottle made of 9.2 grams of plastic Used 600 million pounds of plastic in 2006 and only 400 million pounds in 2012 while growing their business. Reducing carbon footprint by over 200 million pounds.

Reprocessing Reprocessing of plastic is taking waste and scraps of plastic from the production and repelletizing or compounded the scraps so the material can be used again. Example: Milk cartons compounded into toys Most of the toys come from milk jugs, but companies will also use yogurt cups and other plastic scrap sources. After collecting the scraps, companies clean and shred the plastic into small flakes, which are reprocessed and mixed with mineral-based coloring.

Alternative resources
Since plastic is made from crude oil and natural gas efforts are being made to utilize multiple renewable resources for the future. Example: Sugarcane in Brazil
