2 Why Full Day Kindergarten?
According to the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, (ECLS-K): “Children in kindergarten programs that devote a larger portion of the school day to academic instruction, and to reading in particular, make greater gains in reading over the school year than students who spend less time in such instruction.”

3 Why Full Day Kindergarten?
In addition to educational opportunities, full day kindergarten students gain extended experiences with social, emotional, and behavioral learning (Gibbs, 2017).

4 Additional Research As students enter kindergarten with pre-existing inequalities and differences, “school is a place where children should have equal chances to make the most of their potential” (Lee & Burkam, 2002, p.5). “In order for educators to close the achievement gap in the long term, we must begin to invest in students at an early age to set them up for a lifetime of learning and achievement” (Houlihan, 2017, p.2).

5 The Practitioners’ View
More time for social development and conflict resolution skills to advance. Increases students’ social, emotional and academic readiness for First Grade. More time to meet all students’ individual needs. Provides equal educational opportunities for all students. Nutritional needs can be met by providing breakfast and lunch in school.

6 Practitioner Goals for Full Day Kindergarten
To instill a lifelong love of learning in our youngest students. To foster appropriate social interactions and behaviors with peers and adults. To teach Kindergarten standards at a developmentally appropriate pace. To develop and nurture future Pleasant Valley citizens.
