1 Do Now: Wrinkles on the Brain

2 Do Now: Wrinkles on the Brain
According to the New York Times, recent studies of Albert Einstein’s preserved brain suggest that his intelligence may actually have been due in part to the absence of a fissure in the inferior frontal lobe which is an area involved in mathematical thinking. OPINION QUESTION: Do you think a human brain has MORE or LESS wrinkles compared to a sheep brain? Justify or explain your answer!

3 Whiteboard Activity: Opinion Questions about the Cardiovascular System
Team leader - Discuss with your group. (every group members shares their opinion) Recorder – Write on the whiteboard. How does the heart deliver oxygen and nutrients to all parts of the body? Why does your heart beat faster when you exercise?

4 Whiteboard Activity: Opinion Questions about the Cardiovascular System
How does the heart deliver oxygen and nutrients to all parts of the body? Why does your heart beat faster when you exercise?

5 Whiteboard Activity: Opinion Questions about the Cardiovascular System
Recorder – write on the whiteboard What does your group want to learn in this unit? Write at least 2 question about the heart.

6 Notes: The Heart Glue this picture on the next blank page of your notebook and take notes. Heartbeat video

7 The Heart Figure 11.2a

8 The Heart Wall Three layers (cardio/cardium = heart)
Epicardium (epi = outer/outside) Outside layer Connective tissue layer Myocardium (myo = muscle) Middle layer Mostly cardiac muscle Endocardium (endo = inside) Inner layer

9 The Heart Chambers Right and left side act as separate pumps
Four chambers Atria (2) superior Receiving chambers (blood) Right atrium Left atrium Ventricles (2) inferior Discharging chambers (blood) Right ventricle Left ventricle

10 Differences in Right and Left Ventricles
Make an observation about the left and right ventricles. Why do you think the left ventricle has more muscle tissue? Figure 11.4

11 The Heart Valves Allow blood to flow in only one direction to prevent backflow Four valves Atrioventricular (AV) valves—between atria and ventricles Open during heart relaxation and closed during ventricular contraction Semilunar valves—between ventricle and artery Closed during heart relaxation but open during ventricular contraction

12 The Heart: Associated Great Vessels
Arteries (away from the heart) Aorta Leaves left ventricle Pulmonary (lungs) arteries Leave right ventricle

13 The Heart: Associated Great Vessels
Veins (toward the heart) Superior and inferior venae cavae Enter right atrium Pulmonary veins (four) Enter left atrium

14 Classwork Packet: The Circulatory System
Work with your lab group to complete.. Diagram of the heart (choose any two colors) #13 = aortic valve (textbook page 345) (30 min) Classwork Packet: The Circulatory System #1 – 5 and SELF SCORE Classwork Packet: The Circulator System #6 – 19 and SELF SCORE Resources – heart model, textbook, notes, diagram in yellow folder

15 EXIT SLIP: THE HEART On your own… Open note
You will Turn in the EXIT SLIP The Circulatory System Packet (1 – 5)
