2 Why an Outdoor Education experience??
School years would be a poorer experience without outdoor education. It’s a LOT of fun We want our students to be confident, connected, actively involved life long learners (NZ Curriculum vision statement) New skills, problem solving, communication, responsibility, independence, confidence, challenge, relationships, acceptance, leadership, persistence, teamwork To get students to start their focus for the Hillary award

Contributing positively to the life journey of young people through adventure and rich outdoor learning experiences that develop care and respect for self, others and place, in the spirit of Sir Edmund Hillary.

5 Instructors Long term, mature & professional instructors
Highest possible qualifications in NZ Work by “Challenge by choice” belief Will adapt programme according to skill set of individuals and groups NZOIA and Skills Active (Maritime NZ approved)

6 Programme groups of up to 10 to one instructor, one staff member or parent assigned per group Each group may experience: Outdoor skills learning Overnight camp/tramp/kayak (in tents) High ropes Abseiling Caving (Okupata) (Duke of Edinburgh standard 15-20km) There may be a few changes to the programme but these will be minor. Grade 2 guided and self guided rafting – either Tongariro or Whakapapa depending on river water levels. Group option (canoeing/kayaking/more ropes/mountain biking/tramp /abseiling)

7 A Typical Week Sunday – Meet at school at pm. (Vera St) Arrive Hillary Outdoors about 6.30pm. Monday – Group bonding/local day/abseil Tuesday- Canoeing/ Ring float Wednesday – Overnighter/Journey Thursday –Caves/high ropes Friday – Flying fox/clean-up Leave 1pm. Arrive at school approximately 6.30pm.

8 A typical day Morning 6.30am Wake up. May have breakfast duty or lunch making duty. 7.30am Breakfast 8.00 am Duties and prep 8.45am meet instructor and go out for the whole day Evening Return Hillary Outdoors 5pm 5.30pm May be on dinner duty 6.30 pm Dinner 8.00 pm Evening activities 9.30pm in bunkrooms 10.00pm Lights out

9 Food Bring money to purchase dinner on the first day, enroute.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner provided, important we know dietary requirements Share – a - supper (students are asked to bring some baking for this)

10 Gear Each girl must have all the gear on the list
Some gear is available for loan (see Ultranet) May get wet every day so be prepared. No cotton clothing for the water activities or if it rains! Long socks required for boots each day Boots/walking shoes should be worn in. All gear must be named, if you value it. Personal first aid

11 Rules! No Ipods/cell phones
Appropriate and safe behaviour expected at all times Respect the rights of others-sleep, clean-up, show initiative
