ENERGY COMES FROM.... FOOD! However, not all organisms can eat the same things. Let’s watch this Discovery Education video to learn more about the energy flow between organisms.
6
PRODUCERS Producers are organisms that make their own food for energy.
Producers are the beginning of a simple food chain. Producers are plants and vegetables. Plants are at the beginning of every food chain that involves the Sun. All energy comes from the Sun and plants are the ones who make food with that energy. They use the process of photosynthesis. Plants also make loads of other nutrients for other organisms to eat. Examples: Oak Tree, Palm Tree, Grass, Plankton (Plants in general)
7
CONSUMERS Consumers are organisms that eat other living things for energy. Three different types of consumers: Herbivores are consumers because they eat plants for energy. (Examples: Rabbit, Deer, Cows, Kagaroos) Carnivores are consumers because they eat other animals for energy. (Examples: Cheetah, Lion, Tiger, Venus Fly Trap, Crocodiles, Owls, Snakes, Sharks) Omnivores are consumers because they eat both plants and animals for energy. (Ex: Humans, Bears, Racoons, Chickens, Some fish)
8
DECOMPOSERS Decomposers are organisms that break down other dead plants or animals for energy. If you die, they eat you. If you poop, they eat that. If you lose a leaf, they eat it. Whenever something that was alive dies, the decomposers get it. Decomposers break down nutrients in the dead "stuff" and return it to the soil. The producers can then use the nutrients and elements once it's in the soil. The decomposers complete the system, returning essential molecules to the producers. Examples: Mold, some types of worms, fungi, some bacteria, flies (& maggots), cockroaches, lactobacteria (for your mozzarella cheese and frozen yoghurt)

What would you call a consumer who eats beef a chicken?
WHITE BOARD QUIZ! What would you call a consumer who eats beef a chicken? What would you call a consumer that eats leaves, fruits, and nuts? What would you call a consumer who eats rice and chicken? What would you call the organisms that cause dead plants and animals to rot and break down?

ENERGY FLOW A food chain shows a direct link between and animal and the thing it eats and is eaten by. Food chains show how energy flows between organisms.
