2
Cyclic Hydrocarbons: A cyclic hydrocarbon is one that contains a hydrocarbon ring. Rings with 5 or 6 carbons are the most abundant To name a cycloalkane (cyclic hydrocarbon where all carbons are single bonded) just add “cyclo” as a prefix to the corresponding alkane name 2nds one is cycloctane
3
Aromatic compounds Contain benzene rings (or similar)
Benzene Ring: C6H6 in a ring like structure Many have a sweet scent (Aroma), hence the name aromatics Any Organic compound that is not considered an aromatic compound is an aliphatic compound.
4
Benzene ring The benzene molecule is a 6 carbon ring, each carbon bonded to one hydrogen leaving one electron from each carbon free to participate in a double bond. Structural diagram Line Drawing
5
Benzene In benzene the electrons are actually shared evenly thoughout the ring, so each bond is actually a hybrid of a single and double bond. Benzene is the simplest aromatic compound
6
Polymers Organic molecules can bond together to form long chains of atoms. A polymer is a large molecule formed by the covalent bonding of repeating smaller molecules. The small molecules that combine to form a polymer is called a monomer.
8
Polymers Plastics are made up of polymers.
Polyethylene is a common polymer used to make plastic bottles, containers and toys. Polyethylene is made from several ethane molecules combining together to form a long chain.
9
PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is also a polymer used to make pipes and vinyl fabrics. It is made by chloroethene molecules bonding together.
