4 In order for a speaker or writer to speak or write, he or she MUST consider both the audience and purpose. For example, if you are talking to an elementary school class, your topic, diction, and tone will be different than if you are speaking to a high school class Another example, when you talk to your friends, your topic, diction, and tone are different than when you talk to your parents or teachers.

5 LOGOS (LOGIC) Logos refers to any attempt to appeal to the intellect. Everyday arguments rely heavily on ethos and pathos – but academic arguments rely more on logos. Why it works: Audiences trust information that is backed up with evidence, particularly when they are unsure of their position on the topic How it works: Uses clear and responsible ideas with proof (any statistic); using facts and statistics to logically support idea Effect of Logos: Evokes a cognitive, rational response

6 ETHOS (CREDIBILITY) Refers to the trustworthiness of the speaker/writer; Tells audience that speaker/writer is reliable, qualified, and competent Why it works: We tend to believe people we respect, trust, and like How it works: Use vocabulary and grammar appropriate to the audience; Use humor to make audience like speaker/writer; Use anecdotes to demonstrate knowledge or relatability Effect of Ethos: Demonstrates speaker’s/writer’s reliability and respect for audience’s ideas and values

7 PATHOS (EMOTION) Appeal to emotion – meant to evoke an emotional response Why it works – emotions of love, hate, fear, hope, etc are extremely powerful and shape decisions we make everyday. It draws a personal connection between audience’s experience and issue at hand. How it works – loaded words; anecdotes; vivid descriptions Effect of Pathos – evokes a personal, emotional response
