The people of Ancient Egypt would pay taxes through labor. The people could not farm when the Nile River flooded and had to wait until the Nile River receded. While the people waited for the Nile River to recede, they would work on pyramids, roads, and temples. The work on government projects was considered a type of tax on the people.

Scene The United States government is starting something new. As soon as you graduate you will be required to work on a government project for two years. You will not be paid for this because you are already being compensated by being able to live here. Do you agree with this why or why not?
