What would you do? On a note card answer these questions: Scenario: You just bought a company. The old owner promised a few people jobs right before he sold to you. Would you honor the promise made by the old owner & hire those people? What would be positive about keeping them? What could be negative about keeping them? Would it matter if you did not personally like or agree with the old owner? Why or why not?

I. Jefferson Wins Election of 1800!
A. He wants to simplify gov’t 1. Jefferson PLANS TO: shrink size of federal govt., cut spending, and eliminate many taxes (Republicanism) 2. HOWEVER, Jefferson expands Federal Gov’t & buys Louisiana Territory from France for $15 mill. a. Has Lewis & Clark, lead the “Corps of Discovery” with translator named Sacajawea, to explore the new territory

B. Marbury v. Madison 1. Sec. of State Madison doesn’t deliver John Adams’ judicial nominations to Congress 2. Nominee named Marbury cites Judiciary Act of 1789, tries to force Sup Court to enforce nominations : Chief Justice John Marshall, “Supreme Court’s power comes from Constitution, not Judiciary Act of 1789” 4. Sup. Court applies principle of judicial review (court can cancel a law that is unconstitutional)

A. Missouri & Maine want to become states (free or slave states?) Monroe supports states’ rights to chose North upset that slavery could expand B. Compromise: Missouri will be added as a slave state, Maine a free state In future 36° 30’ lat. will determine future of slavery, with North of 36/30=free, South of 36/30= slave
