So, What’s a Build Event? A build event is where you build the device before the tournament. You test the device at the tournament to earn points Unlike test events, there is normally not a written component with these events.

Why Should I do a Build Event?
Because it’s fun Because there are lots of spots to fill and we need teams to build (It’s one area where we are lacking) Because you know exactly what to expect when you go to the tournament (or at least you should)

Important things to keep in mind
Build Events require you to build an object that you will test at the competition. This means that you will be making the device AT HOME or AT SCHOOL.

Some Tips Read the rules carefully.
Unlike test events, you have to follow the rules exactly or you may get disqualified. We will provide you supervisor rubrics (the sheets they use to score you) and we will try to test your devices before you test them for real in competition.

Research Look up your event to see whether somebody else has medaled or done something unique. You may also find some interesting kits or products that you can buy to help you out with a specific event.

Plane Create a Plan to follow
When building anything, we suggest that you make a detailed engineering drawing and keep a copy of the rules. We recommend putting all of this information in a Binder that you can keep with you while you build.

A note on Drawings Always keep your dimensions a couple centimeters smaller than what the maximum can be. For some reason, as we have figured out, things “get larger” as we build things and the extra wiggle room is sometimes needed for the device to fit SCIOLY standards.

Materials All build events use consumables.
We will try to provide you with the items you need to build your device, however, it is your responsibility to ask us for materials well in advance so we can purchase them for you. To request materials, go to the following website: mvhsscioly.weebly.com

Pictures To make sure you are on track with your events, we require you to take pictures of your progress each week and us those pictures. Additionally, we would like you to blog about what you did each week so that we have an idea of where you are at.

Testing Since you guys may not be tested in these events, placing you on teams will be difficult. The best way for you to be competitive for a spot on our team is for you to actively take pictures of your progress and blog frequently. Additionally, we will try to test your devices out in the coming weeks to see how they fair.

Boomilever This event asks you to build a device that holds 15kg of mass It must attach to a wall and must be loaded on the other side. ATTACH HERE Load here

Bungee Egg Drop New 2014 Event
A device is pulled from a bungee cord with an egg in it. The goal is to stop the device as close to the ground as possible without breaking the egg. The team with the largest displacement wins.

Elastic Launched Glider
Teams are to create an aircraft that launches using elastic and flies like a normal plane. The team with the longest airtime wins.

Mission Possible (C) This is a new event for 2014.
Basically, it’s a Rube Goldberg machine that does a number of specified things (in the rule book) in the shortest amount of time.

Scrambler Teams are to build a car that stops before a wall placed at a certain distance. The device must also accommodate an egg and it must not break throughout the run. The team that gets the closest to the wall wins.

Engineering Knowledge Events
These events have a building component and a test component. Event List: MagLev Circuit Lab Compound Machines

MagLev Teams are to build a device that hovers over a track using magnets and is propelled by a single propeller. THIS EVENT ALSO HAS A TEST COMPONENT ABOUT MAGNETS.

Circuit Lab The first half of this event consists of an exam covering Physical Circuitry (the science part, no IC or Logic knowledge required). The second half is done on a prototyping board (PLD or Breadboard). You may need to know logic or the function of IC chips for this section.

Compound Machines This is a new event for this year.
The first half consists of an exam about compound machines and will ask you to calculate forces on the objects in the machines (Think physics). The second half will be a lab investigation using compound machines (think physics lab exams).
