1 Team Check-Up Orientation Briefing
The purpose of the orientation meeting is to help team members feel comfortable with the assessment process. Preparation: Prior to the meeting prepare one copy of the Team Check-Up for each team member to review. You can download this from our web site at It will be found in Team Talk in the Downloads area. If possible, set up a computer with an Internet connection so you can demonstrate how the online response works. Orientation Briefing

2 Agenda Purpose of the assessment What will be assessed
Overview of the assessment process Confidentiality The orientation should take about 30 minutes. Be sure to explain why you have chosen to conduct this assessment and show the team what is in it for them. During the orientation, team members will get a chance to review the assessment items, and should understand the assessment process - especially the fact that it is very confidential.

3 Purpose of Assessment Review team strengths
Identify areas for improvement Develop a plan of action The Team Check-Up is designed to highlight team strengths as well as any opportunities for improvement which can make being a part of the team a productive and happy experience. If team members approach the process with a positive attitude, willing to open themselves to the possibility of improving team performance, everyone on the team will benefit. Be prepared to discuss how you will go about leading a review of the assessment results in a Town Meeting and the importance of developing an action plan. The most important commitment the team leader can make to the process is to hear what people have to say and be determined to take immediate action on at least one important item of feedback from the survey.

4 Team Behaviors: Nine Categories
Purpose Role Clarity Work Environment Conflict Management Communication Performance Feedback Team Time Problem Solving The Team Check-Up consists of 35 team behaviors organized into nine categories. For each behavior the respondent will be asked to rate his/her perception of the actual performance of the team at this point in time. The rating on the web site will be on a five-point scale. The final results are aggregated into the nine areas. Each person will come to the town meeting with their perceptions of the nine areas presented in a percentage score (100% indicating high performance)

5 Assessment Process Orientation Individual Ratings of Team Behavior
Town Meeting to Review Results Interpretation & Action Planning Reassessment Review the complete process: Orientation - the session team members are attending Individual Ratings - each team member will receive a personal copy of the Team Check-Up. They will then complete an online version and forward it to the facilitator to prepare for the Town Meeting Town Meeting - all team members will meet to review the results of the assessment, identify team strengths and opportunities for improvement, and develop action steps for team development. Interpretation & Action Planning - throughout the Town Meeting dialog among team members will bring life to the numbers found in the aggregate results of the Team Checkup. The final action plan should include specific steps to be taken and the names of those responsible for each action. Reassessment - about six to nine months after this assessment, the process should be repeated and a comparison report produced to highlight the accomplishments made and further development needed. If the team decides to go deeper, you can recommend the more intensive process using 20/20Insight with its ability to gather comments on individual statements. Contact The TEAM Approach for details.

11 Confidentiality Individual responses online
Forward scores with no identification Anonymous ratings Individual online responses Each person can respond to the checkup on a personal computer. They can even do it at home if they feel it would grant them more privacy.. Forward Procedure Once the assessment is completed, the forward to the facilitator should not include the respondent’s name.. Anonymous ratings The ratings you give will be collected by a facilitator and posted on flip chars for the Town Meeting.. They will appear anonymously as dots on a scale indicating category scores. No scores will be available for individual items.

12 In The Town Meeting We Will:
Create ground rules Review results Focus on behaviors, not people Be honest and fair Make comments specific & descriptive Develop an action plan During the Town Meeting you will encourage people to comment on why a category is rated high or low. Comments are especially important if you rated a team behavior high or low. They help the team understand the reasons for your ratings. You should review these guidelines again at the town meeting, but note them here during the orientation as well: 1. It is important to be honest and fair in your comments. Tell the truth, but avoid aggressive, harsh, absolute or general statements, such as ”This team has the worst attitude I've ever seen," or ”People never think of anyone but themselves." 2. Your comments should be specific. Describe behaviors or actions that you have observed or experienced first-hand. 3. It is helpful to include a mixture of both positive and constructive comments to give a balance of feedback. Give some examples that illustrate the difference between appropriate and inappropriate comments.
