2 Warm up: Think back to industrialization. What were some problems caused by industrialization? What did people do to fix that?

3 THE PROGRESSIVE ERA A reaction to industrialization – an attempt to fix the problems caused by rapid growth of cities First: fix the lives of those living in tenements and slums Then: fix corruption of Big Business and government

4 HEY – WHAT DOES THIS SOUND LIKE?
Populism! To help the working class and the working people To fix issues they see present in society Populism died out when William Jennings Bryan lost the election… but, it took on a new form through Progressivism

5 Quick discussion: HOW DO PEOPLE ILLUMINATE PROBLEMS OR INJUSTICES IN THE WORLD TODAY?

6 MUCKRAKING To rake muck (dirt, sludge, etc)
To dig up information about people/corporations in an underhanded way In the Progressive Era: journalists who attacked established institutions and leaders as corrupt City councils to Congress

7 MUCKRAKERS Target audience: middle class. WHY? Educated Literate

Established sanitation regulations for the meatpacking industry and federal inspection of meat sold across state lines Pure Food and Drug Act: Prohibited the “manufacturing, sale, or transportation of adulterated or misbranded or poisonous or deleterious (harmful) foods, drugs, medicine, and liquors.” Also forbade misleading advertising
