2. Colony
Dictionary Definition: A country or area that is ruled by another country.
Teacher Explanation: An area that is taken or bought by one country and then used as an extension of that country

3. Mayflower Compact
Dictionary Definition: Document written by the Pilgrims that established general guidelines for self government
Teacher Explanation: The rules and laws the Pilgrims set up to run their colony. Signed by all men in the group.

4. Virginia House of Burgesses
Dictionary Definition: Colonial Virginia’s elected assembly
Teacher Explanation: Virginia's lawmaking body with elected representatives.

5. Mercantilism
Dictionary Definition: Practice of creating and maintaining wealth by carefully controlling trade
Teacher Explanation: When the mother country makes money off of their colonies through trade

6. French and Indian War
Dictionary Definition: War fought between England and the French over the Ohio River Valley
Teacher Explanation: The French and Indians joined forces against England to fight for land in Ohio

7. Proclamation of 1763
Dictionary Definition: British proclamation banning colonial settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains
Teacher Definition: This was Britain’s attempt to keep the colonist from moving west. It made colonist very angry.

8. Navigation Acts
Dictionary Definition: A series of English laws that required the American colonies to trade primarily with England; set taxes on some goods
Teacher Definition: England trying to control the American colonies by telling them they could only trade with them. Limits American merchants

9. Albany Plan of Union
Dictionary Definition: Plan written by Benjamin Franklin that called for the colonies to unite under a common governing body against their enemy
Teacher Definition: Franklin’s idea to bring the colonies together and run a government together. Strength in numbers

10. Slave Trade
Dictionary Definition: The business or process of obtaining, transporting, and selling slaves, especially black Africans to the New World prior to the mid-19th century
Teacher Explanation: The importing of slaves from Africa to work as the labor force in the new world

11. Pilgrims
Dictionary Definition: Members of a Puritan Separatist sect that left England in the early 1600’s to settle in the Americas
Teacher Explanation: The group that left England for the new world to gain religious freedom. Famous for celebrating the first Thanksgiving.
