Nutanix / Veeam SE Zero to Protect
Ronn Martin, Veeam WW Alliances
2
Overview The following is divided into two sections for each respective SE team. It assumes that Veeam SE’s have ready access to existing Veeam Backup & Replication resources but not AHV and conversely that Nutanix SE’s have AHV resources at their disposal but not Veeam Backup & Replication.
3
System Requirements Nutanix Veeam AOS 5.1.1, 5.5+
Nutanix CE July 2017 or later (16GB minimum, 32GB recommended) Veeam Windows Server 2008 SP2 or later (4 vCPU x 4GB RAM minimum) NOTE: allocate sufficient disk space to accommodate the VM(s) targeted for backup testing (generally Veeam processing yields an approximate 2:1 reduction ratio) Veeam Backup & Replication v9.5 Update 4 Veeam AHV Appliance 4 vCPU x 4GB RAM
4
Prerequisites - Nutanix SE’s
5
Resources – Nutanix SE’s
Veeam Product Notes – AHV Appliance Download link - Select “Download Free trial” Register and confirm your veeam.com account Veeam Availiability for Nutanix AHV Download the product Request the 30-day trial license

Veeam Product Notes - Veeam Backup & Replication Server Deploy a Windows server to host Veeam Backup and Replication (VBR) While not necessarily a best practice for testing purposes it’s fine to deploy to the same AHV cluster hosting VM workloads to be backed up. Download VBR 9.5 U4 - (add on products - Veeam ONE, Veeam Enterprise Manager, etc. not required for this test) Refer to the following link for VBR installation instructions NOTE: for testing purposes it is not necessary to download a VBR trial key simply hit “Next” when prompted for a license key to operate in “free” mode
7
Prerequisites - Veeam SE’s
8
Resources – Veeam SE’s Nutanix Installation Notes – Nutanix CE
Registration - Download/docs (login required) - CE vSphere nesting (Veeam internal) AHV VM creation cliff notes Linux – upload OS installer ISO to Prism image service, attach ISO to new VM as CD boot device Windows – “”, additionally upload CE Windows VirtIO driver ISO (“ISO Installer for VirtIO 1.1.1”) from the CE download site to the Prism image service, attach to VM, load drivers during Windows OS install for AHV storage and network access
9
Resources – Veeam SE’s CE CVM memory reduction
Physical hardware installation Download the “Disk Image-based Full Install” and image (Rufus, etc.) to USB stick NOTE: USB drive must remain inserted post-install Virtual installation Refer to the resources from the prior slide Note that installation will fail if at least 2 disk drives with a minimum capacity of 200GB and 500GB respectively are not visible to the CE installer (physical or virtual) IP’s are required for both the CE “kernel” and the Controller VM (CVM) at install time. CVM memory reduction The AHV CVM consumes 16GB RAM by default refer to for tips on how to reduce consumption
