Can only be used with singular count nouns, not plural nouns or non-count nouns

Use THE when you know that your listening knows what you are talking about
The sun is bright today
Please hand this book to the teacher
Please open the door
The box is full of pencils
Use THE the second time you mention a general, indefinite noun
Yesterday, I saw some dogs. The dogs were chasing a cat. The cat was chasing a mouse

The apples are my favorite fruit—NO, unless you mean only certain apples

7. Helpful tips
A singular count noun must always have a, an, the, or another word (like some, my, a few, this, etc.) in front of it

My brother bought the car—yes
My brother bought this car—yes
My brother bought my father’s car—yes
Don’t forget: don’t use the when you really mean all
A picture is worth a thousand words=Pictures are worth a thousand words
