1. What do we mean by the term “form” when referring to poetry? Define the following terms: 1) Sonnet 2) Elegy 3) Ode 4) Ballad 5) Epic 1. Form is the overall pattern of a poem 1) A 14-line poem with a fixed rhyme scheme and a beat pattern called, “iambic pentameter.” It has an octet (8 lines) w/ an ABBA ABBA pattern, then 6 lines w/ CDE CDE or CD CD CD 2) A sad, thoughtful poem that laments the death of a person or a group. 3) A lyrical poem, full of emotion, dedicated to a person, event, or thing. 4) A narrative (story telling) poem meant to be put to music 5) A long poem chronicling the journey of a hero , the dangers he faces, and the obstacles he must overcome.
