Hazard Alert: Navigating Safely Around Campus
Intended audience: Everyone on campus Incident summary An employee had just arrived on campus on their way in to work. As the employee was descending a set of exterior concrete stairs at Engineering B building, the employee slipped and fell sustaining a serious foot injury. Investigation Findings The employee was carrying items in both hands and was not holding the handrail. The stair nosing was damaged in the spot where the employee stepped and lost their balance. Facilities was not aware of the broken stair nosing. The employee did not report the incident right away. In 2018 there were 8 injuries across campus from falls downstairs, most involving rushing and not holding handrails. Actions Taken The damaged stair nosing was repaired. Facilities Management has developed an inspection process for University public spaces. The importance of holding handrails is being emphasized through safety moments and other communications. Any damage to stairs or other walking surfaces that are tripping hazards should be reported to the Customer Care Centre as soon as possible.
