Reading –American Explorers -Take Cornell notes after highlighting who, what, when, where and why
Writing – Look at the southern states of the US. Write the names of each state and their capitals. Write in complete sentences and tell the location of each capital (northern part of state, middle). Indicate the direction. Remember not to capitalize a direction.

5. Review Possessive Pronouns
Possessive pronouns that come before a noun:
My, our
Your,
His, her, its, their, theirs
Adjectives in between do not determine if something is capitalized
When a title/relative is followed by these words, do no capitalize it
Example: Our aunt
No possessive and a name can be substituted- capitalize
Example: We saw Mom at the store.

Reading 1 – Indians of the Southeast – Review Cornell Notes
Identify Southern states and capitals on map.
Look over postal codes – FOR HOMEWORK
TEST OVER SOUTHERN STATES, CAPITALS AND POSTAL CODES – Study for test Sept. 5.
Write a paragraph about the southern states, their capitals and the capital’s location and the state’s postal codes –FOR HOMEWORK
Example: The capital of Ohio is Columbus, which is located in the center of the state. OH is Ohio’s postal code.
Begin the paragraph with a general statement that says how many states are in this region.
End with a clincher sentence taking an idea from the reading and putting it in your own words.

8. Note to Parents Parents of Eighth Grade ESL students,
Each week I will endeavor to send the PowerPoint to you of what we accomplished (and didn’t) that week. I have explained that if we don’t complete a task in class then it must be assigned as homework.
Today we did not look over the postal codes as I wanted to or write a short paragraph listing the Southeastern states and their capitals and postal codes. Students should write this paragraph for homework.
On September 5, students will have a quiz over the Southeastern states, their capitals and postal codes. I am sending you an example of the test and the handouts they should have in their notebook.
If students need help with homework, I would rather help them one-on-one after school then take class time. I will devote ½ of the second class of the week to work on homework or to help study for tests in another class beginning next week. Students must know what homework they have, when it is due, and any materials needed to work on it. The students in this class have different teachers so these students must keep track of what they have to do and when they need to hand it in. this information should be in their planner so please check their planner.
NOTE: Many student textbooks are online. Your child should be able to locate them online. However, if you don’t know, let me know. In addition, most eighth grade teachers attach all their working document onto GRADESPEED. Look for the teacher and then assignments.
