Romans 12:4-6 Members of One Another
Romans 11 is often used as a prooftext for Calvinism. This fails because the Calvinistic interpretation is at odds with other Scriptures. Scriptures are understood in light of other Scriptures; therefore, we understand this chapter from the total of the Bible
4
For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another Romans 12:4-5
5
What is the Church? People Who Are Saved! Acts 2:47 Ephesians 2:16
What is the church? It is the collective saved.
6
For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, Philippians 3:20
7
Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God Ephesians 2:19

A Citizen of the United States: Bound by the law of the land Common ideology and rights
We understand that God is three persons, called jointly the Godhead in the NT, Elohim in the OT. Isa. 42 nicely points to all three

A Resident of Hillsboro: Bound by locality Living as a community
10
A Citizen of the Kingdom: Bound by the law of the land Common ideology and rights A Resident of the Church: Bound by locality Living as a community There is a similarity (not a parallel) between our citizenship in our nation and our community relationship, and our relationship to the church universal (the kingdom) and the church local (the congregation).

I want that! Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God” John 3:5 Simon… “Give me this …..also” Peter…."You have neither part nor portion in this” Acts 8:18-21 How do I obtain this citizenship? The commander answered, "With a large sum I obtained this citizenship." And Paul said, "But I was born a citizen.“ Acts 22:28 Citizenship in the Kingdom and Membership in the body are not obtained just because we want it. Consider Simon’s rebuke when he offered to by his membership. Paul says of his roman citizenship, he was born to it. So are we. But for this lesson, let us consider that there is but ONE characteristic that makes us Fellows and Partners in the work of the church, universal or local
15
A Fellow in the Universal Church
Submission For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes Romans 10:3-4 Submission is the means to obtaining citizenship in the kingdom. In the case of fellowship, we must submit ourselves to God

18
A Member in the Local Church
Submission Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for "God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.“ Peter 5:5 Submission is the means to obtaining citizenship in the kingdom. In the case of fellowship, we must submit ourselves to God
19
A Member in the Local Church
Submission Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct……. Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you Hebrews 13:7,17 Submission is the means to obtaining citizenship in the kingdom. Failed Partnerships NO SUBMISSION! The absence of placing membership
Quitting when disagreements arise Timid leadership NO SUBMISSION! Today we seem to have a problem with the idea of submission to the congregation. Brethren are no longer identifying themselves as members of a local church. Church hopping, whether over issues or problems, or just to find a more exciting congregation. . Brethren refuse to be chastised. Overseers fear applying church discipline for the consequences in the congregation. All these things seem to be because of our absence of submission to a local group of saints.

An Oath of Membership Fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others Philippians 2:2-4
