4 Nazi Germany was a dictatorship
Vocabulary box Nazi Germany was a dictatorship This meant that everyone was ruled by one person. His rules were very strict and you would be punished severely if you did not obey them The Nazis created a successful dictatorship through establishing a police state, where the authorities had far more rights than ordinary people.

5 Although Hitler was the leader of Germany, most of his work was done by other people
These groups ensured his laws were obeyed The groups did their job so thoroughly, Hitler had to do very little

6 How did the Nazis control the German population?
Use this title as the start of a mind map and add on information throughout the lesson How did the Nazis control the German population?

7 The Gestapo The Gestapo were the secret police
They tapped phones and read mail Anyone suspected of being against The Nazis was instantly arrested They also used torture to gain confessions from suspects They wore ordinary clothes There were around 45,000 Gestapo agents in Nazi Germany

8 The SS The SS were the state security service
It was their job to eliminate all opposition in Nazi Germany They were ruthless and violent and people were terrified of them

15 The Courts The Nazis took over the German judicial system and made it pro-Nazi All judgers and lawyers who were not loyal to Hitler were sacked and replaced with Nazis ‘Show Trials’ took place to make examples of ‘enemies of the State’ This meant there was no hope of justice if you were accused of a ‘crime’ i.e. anything that opposed the Nazis

He controlled all Nazi propaganda ‘Minister for public enlightenment’ He publicised Hitler’s successes eg, building the autobahn (motorway system) He ensured things like Nazi brutality and executions were kept secret from ordinary Germans He censored the press – people only heard good things Goebbels made hundreds of Nazi propaganda films and they were shown before every film in the cinema to ensure people stayed loyal to Hitler
