1 Introduction to MIS

2 Information systems INFORMATION SYSTEMS ORGANIZATIONS TECHNOLOGY
MANAGEMENT

3 Model of an Information System
H/W S/W DATA INFORMATION People Procedures Stored Data

4 System Concepts System Integrated set of components
Interact to achieve a particular function or goal. They have boundaries, outputs and inputs, methods of converting inputs into outputs, and system interfaces. They are composed of interrelated and interdependent subsystems.

5 System Concepts System Boundaries: Subsystems:
System boundary defines its scope of activities It delineates an area of responsibility Subsystems: A system can have numerous subsystems. Each of which has elements, interactions and objectives. In business system, various functions are subsystems.

6 System Concepts Inputs and outputs
A system or subsystem are organized to produce outputs from inputs with some value or utility. Example: A training program should produce trained employees with certain skills, knowledge, or behavior from its inputs—untrained employees.

7 Typical Subsystem- An example
INPUT Students without computer literacy OUTPUT Students with Programming Skills Subsystem A Subsystem B Introduction to Data Processing Students with Computer Literacy C Programming O/p From A I/p to B

8 IPO Model INPUT PROCESS OUTPUT FEEDBACK
